India - Here i come

My friend being selected to receive an offer on air fare via Silk Air to India. Both of us has decided to take this opportunity to visit India.

I have been working with the Indian from India via conference call and some of them face to face. My current boss is an Indian but she has become American and currently staying in India. I heard a lot of stories regarding India from Indian stayed in India and Malaysian visited India.

Anyway, I'm exciting to explore this country which a lot of people say it's very challenging to go around and exploring this country. How challenging, to me i could not imagine but I have been to Uganda Africa, not sure is it like what i have experience in Uganda? Hmmm... let see.

Anyway, we decided to go to Darjeeling, Northeast of India, near Himalaya mountain range... So it will be -17c during March. Very cold eh~

We have shortlisted 3 places to explore and 2 Unesco Heritage.
  • Kolkata
  • Bohd Gaya
  • Darjeeling
  • Mahabodhi Temple @ Bohd Gaya
  • The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (a.k.a - Toy Train)

My friend starts the planning soon... I'm so looking forward to see and experience India. Not sure i will like it or not but i bet it will be a new experience for me.

Anyone have been to Darjeeling/Bodhgaya/Kolkata area that can share with me some valuable information and experiences?

India is a beautiful place,a spiritual land filled with mysticism and ancient monuments..I must admit, I've never ventured into the northern part, been to India many times, but so far I've only explored the southern region, so i can say,India is definitely super big, haha...i have few close friends, Chinese and Malays who had been to the northern states of Bihar etc, and to be honest, they told me they preferred southern region, as they claim southern folks were more friendly compared to the hostile northern folks, and there's a reason for it...you see, it's all due to India's past, the moghuls were ruling over the northern states for a long time, hence there are more muslims there, so they are basically not so friendly people...their southern counterparts on the other hand, which consist of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalee, Gujarati etc people, these folks are tolerant and they get along with everyone, and perhaps that's the reason why Japanese, Korean tourists love to flock the tourist spots on the southern region....

but don't worry, India isn't really a dangerous place, I don't know why, many Malaysian Indians prefer to condemn their ancestral land, maybe they just don't know how to lepak there i guess,haha...

so here are few tips i can give you..when you're in india...

- make sure you drink only bottled mineral water...
- bring a supply of activated charcoal tablets, get Merck, it's a good brand, and take one tablet daily in the morning, this will avoid stomach upset...
- when you visit the money changer, always ask them for smaller change, they have this bad habit of giving Rs1000 bank notes, later you might have problem if you want to change it, so ask them for few Rs100, Rs50 notes...
- always change money in bank,it's safer...
- when going shopping, bargain !! the moment they see you, they will plan to empty your wallet, plus you're Chinese, so mesti kena tipu, hahaha...
- don't ever ride on autorickshaws unless you dare to, plus they always love to cheat on foreigners, if the meter fare is Rs50, they'll ask you for Rs200...so watch out...

i can continue and tell you plenty of things, but i will stop here, if you need to know more, just ask me,and i'll reply =)

Zerachiel: Thanks for the tips~ Initially we wanted to go south but my travel buddy and I wanted to see the Himalaya Mountain Range. So ended up we choose Darjeeling area. Maybe i should make a trip down to Seremban and have meal/tea with you to hear more about your experience in India if you don't mind. :-)
